Gonorrhoea in Manchester; incidence of repeated infections.

چکیده
The incidence of gonorrhoea as shown by the annual returns of the Ministry of Health has not shown the fall which could reasonably be expected. It is difficult to explain this satisfactorily, since the treatment of the disease is simple and effective. The simplicity and efficiency of treatment may in some ways have contributed to this continued high incidence by allowing re-infection to occur in a comparatively short time. Before the introduction of chemotherapy and the antibiotics, an individual infected with gonorrhoea spent a considerable time under treatment and had therefore little chance of becoming re-infected within a short space of time. Nowadays, in the vast majority of cases, effective treatment takes only a few minutes, the blood level of the antibiotic falls after a few days, and re-infection may then occur. This process may be continued so that, in any one year, one individual "repeater" may account for a number of infections. Another factor which has undoubtedly been operating since the war years has been the change in population, especially in the large towns. Disturbances in other countries and full employment in Great Britain have attracted large numbers of immigrants from Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, and because of social difficulties these people have contributed to the incidence of venereal disease. It is estimated that greater Manchester has a population of 2,400,000 (Laird, 1957); no accurate figures are available of the number of foreign nationals, but it has been suggested that

Chlamydial infection of the urogenital tract in promiscuous and non-promiscuous women.
Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the urogenital tract of women presumed to be non-promiscuous, and in presumably promiscuous women attending a Special Clinic in Manchester was studied. Two hundred female members of hospital staff, who formed the non-promiscuous group, were found to have a 1% incidence of chlamydial infection. This compared with an incidence of 26% among 200 women attending th...

متن کاملGonorrhoea in Greenland: geographic differences in diagnostic activity and incidence of gonorrhoea in 2015
For decades the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been a health concern in Greenland, especially within the age group of 15-34 year olds. However, no overview exists of the potential differences in regional incidence and management of STIs. This study investigates the age, gender and region specific diagnostic activity and incidence of gonorrhoea in Greenland in 2015. The stu...
متن کاملIncrease of sexually transmitted infections, but not HIV, among young homosexual men in Amsterdam: are STIs still reliable markers for HIV transmission?
OBJECTIVES The incidence of HIV and STIs increased among men who have sex with men (MSM) visiting our STI clinic in Amsterdam. Interestingly, HIV increased mainly among older (> or =35 years) MSM, whereas infection rates of rectal gonorrhoea increased mainly in younger men. To explore this discrepancy we compared trends in STIs and HIV in a cohort of young HIV negative homosexual men from 1984 ...
متن کاملRate of repeat diagnoses in men who have sex with men for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae: a retrospective cohort study.
UNLABELLED Background Sexually transmissible infections (STIs) have increased rapidly among men who have sex with men (MSM). One of the most effective strategies to control STIs is partner notification. Inadequate partner notification may be associated with high rates of repeat diagnoses with STIs. The aim of this study is to estimate and compare the rate of chlamydia and gonorrhoea infection f...
